Update on that oil painting.

Yep. This is the best I could do with my iPhone camera. I may have to kidnap a photography major once this is done. Though i feel like i could work on this thing for a hundred years and it would never be done.

Getting close...

Touched up a lot of things here. Still a couple areas that need attention but this is mostly done. Mainly I'm Still not sure about the hat and the text. The rest of the process is in an early post.

Some more objects/textures.

More randomness I sketched tonight.

Random Objects/Textures

Spent some time sketching random objects, things that might appear in games or animations. I'm going to start creating more game assets and sprites in the future. I'm also trying paint more stylized than I would normally do.

Some Recent Figure Work

Figure drawings from my studio class. Most of these are about 15 min poses. Sorry about the quality. Actually I'm not sorry, I'm a broke college student eating ramen out of a coffee mug, I can't afford a nice camera.

Huck Finn Cover

This next project is something for class which I am using as an opportunity to create a more stylized, friendly piece. I'm creating a cover for Huckleberry Finn, and wanted to show a scene of  Huck and Jim (the slave) on the river. I'm using myself as reference for Huck, and got my roommate to pose for Jim.

Here is a sketch I came up with. My idea was to keep the proportions pretty much accurate but simplify the anatomy into shapes. I'm using sharp edges and trying to keep most lines straight. I also decided I was going to have a strong light coming from the left to add some drama.

Here is my sketch after in Photoshop with added lighting.

I started doing the background next. I wanted to make sure there would be enough contrast between the characters and the sky/river. I made sure the sky matched the lighting. Compositionally (Is that a word?), I tried to have all the background elements point towards Huck and frame Jim's head nicely. Like the characters, I kept everything fairly simplified into straight edges, except for the clouds.

Here I started to render and add some detail. I also adjusted the colors slightly by adding more saturation/contrast. At this point I would say its maybe 70% done. There a couple things I'm thinking I'm going to change. The eyes and the perspective on the hat seem off to me. The text is still temporary, I'll most likely do the letters by hand.

Some new paintings.

Between all my class work and other stuff going on in my life, I still try and do a lot of personal work. I've got some new paintings which are still in their early stages. Both are atmospheric landscapes similar to the rest of my work. Quintessential me.

This is a quick color sketch of an idea that I've been thinking about recently. I was going for a fairly limited pallet here. This one was done digitally and I may eventually make it a finish piece once I get some more  time on my hands.

This is an oil painting I would say is about half way done. Its on a 20x24 canvas. This one was inspired by Caspar David Friedrich since I love his work. He does mostly dark, sublime scenes of ruins in nature. Everything is basically there I just need to add greater detail and adjust some of the perspective a bit.
